Artisan Shopping Tour
Do you want to discover all the secrets of Japanese culture? On this tour, we reveal all the intricate details of the craftsmanship of Tokyo as we explore the ancient districts of Ningyocho and Nihonbashi.
Artisan Shopping Tour
Our cultural tour starts in the heart of the Ningyocho district, known for its ancient traditions and where we will learn about some of the techniques and tricks of Japanese gastronomy.
Our first stop will be some traditional candy shops, which have existed for more than a century. You can find out for yourself just how delicious they are. We will also try Ningyoyaki, a small stuffed sponge cake in a traditional bakery.
Afterwards, we will visit a senbei (rice cake) shop and a famous local establishment which sells tenugui, hand-woven towels depicting traditional Japanese scenes.
Then, we will take you to one of the eight temples of Ningyocho which is devoted to virtue, long life, learning and wealth. In fact, you can leave a coin here as a religious offering in exchange for prosperity. We then head to Nihonbashi, an ancient trading area which today is one of the financial centres of Tokyo. There you will encounter the striking contrast of the stock exchange alongside some traditional shops.
Japanese calligraphy is known as Shodo. Discover the hidden secrets of this ancient art form in an old stationery shop. Later, we will enter a shop selling traditional toothpicks, handcrafted from the wood of the Kuromoji tree. This establishment is incredibly old, first opening its doors in 1704.
We finish the tour of Japanese culture close to the Mitsukoshimae metro station at around 4:15 pm.
